How do you meet people after moving to Fort Walton Beach?

Short answer: pick one thing that happens every week, and keep showing up.

Moving here is easy. Feeling at home takes a little longer. The fastest way to get there is a weekly habit, like a run club, a trivia night, a sports league or a volunteer shift. A few weeks in, strangers start turning into familiar faces.

The Saturday Market and the free Friday concerts at The Landing are easy first steps.

Many locals also find their crowd online first. Search Facebook for your town plus "moms," "newcomers" or "military spouses." Military families get a head start through the spouses' clubs at Eglin and Hurlburt.

A local's take: It's a small community. If you have kids, you'll keep running into the same parents. If you're single, grab a couple of friends, or a few people from base, and head to the beach. Military spouses find a lot of their people, even gym partners, through local Facebook groups, and joining a gym is one of the easiest ways to meet people here.

Below you'll find 15 ways to meet people in Fort Walton Beach and make friends, the beaches locals actually use, where to go at night, culture and heritage, golf, tennis and the water, what the kids can do, and the practical stuff: doctors, the VA, the airport and getting your license.

Editor's noteHurricane Isaias came through in early October 2026. Most places are back open, but a few parks and piers are still closed for repairs, so check a group's page or call before you go.

How long does it take to feel at home here?

Faster than most people expect. Pick one weekly thing, like a run club, a trivia night, a sports league or a volunteer shift, and give it a couple of months. That's usually when the "hey, you're back!" moments start.

Where can I play golf in Fort Walton Beach?

The city-owned Fort Walton Beach Golf Club has two 18-hole courses, and Shalimar Pointe is just up the road. Bluewater Bay, Destin's courses and Sandestin are all within about half an hour.
